    Cefnogi merched a menywod mewn gwyddoniaeth

    Creu Cymru mwy cyfartal a lewyrchus

    Nid yw’n gyfrinach bod y sectorau STEM – Gwyddoniaeth, Technoleg, Peirianneg a Mathemateg – yn cael eu dominyddu gan ddynion. Dau eithriad yn gyffredinol mae’n debyg yw’r gwyddorau biolegol a meddygaeth, ond hyd yn oed yn y sectorau hyn, mae dynion yn meddiannu llawer o’r swyddi uchaf.

    Rwyf wedi bod yn falch iawn fy mod wedi bod yn gysylltiedig â Bwrdd Menywod mewn STEM Llywodraeth Cymru ers mis Mai y llynedd. Mae gan y Bwrdd gynrychiolaeth gref ar lefel y Gweinidog, ac mae Hyrwyddwyr Menywod dylanwadol iawn mewn STEM o bob rhan o ddiwydiant ac addysg hefyd yn ei phoblogi.

    Credaf nad diwydiant ac addysg yn unig sy’n wynebu heriau wrth hwyluso’r llwybr i gyflawni hobïau a swyddi STEM, ond y gymdeithas gyfan. Dyna pam y cymerais rôl Cadeirydd is-grŵp sy’n delio â chyfathrebu ar gyfer Menywod mewn STEM.

    Y ddau brif allbwn o’r is-grŵp cyfathrebu oedd:

    Mae buddion cael gweithlu STEM mwy cyfartal yn gorgyffwrdd yn gryf â gwerthoedd Afallen. Credwn y byddai gweithlu STEM a oedd yn adlewyrchu rhywedd yng Nghymru yn cefnogi Cymru mwy cyfartal a mwy llewyrchus.

    Mae gweithlu STEM mwy cytbwys hefyd yn cefnogi tri o Nodau Datblygu Cynaliadwy’r Cenhedloedd Unedig, sef Addysg o Safon (Nod 4), Cydraddoldeb Rhyw (Nod 5) a Gwaith Gweddus a Thwf Economaidd (Nod 8).

    Sut allwch chi gymryd rhan?

    Mae angen cefnogaeth menywod a dynion ar bob mudiad WiSTEM ym mhob cefndir. Dyma rai pethau ymarferol a fydd yn helpu i wneud y sector STEM, a chymdeithas yn ehangach, yn fwy hygyrch i fenywod, a thrwy hynny wella ffyniant a chydraddoldeb i ni i gyd:
    1. Ystyriwch ychwanegu eich cefnogaeth i Fenywod mewn STEM at eich proffil cyfryngau cymdeithasol. Mae gen i ‘Ffeministaidd’ yn fy un i, sy’n atgof cyhoeddus i mi fy hun o’r ymddygiadau a’r gweithredoedd rydw i’n disgwyl dal fy hun iddyn nhw
    2. Os ydych chi’n hapus i weithredu fel llysgennad STEM mewn ysgol leol, neu’n hapus i siarad â’r cyfryngau (print, radio neu deledu) ynghylch pam ei bod yn bwysig gwella cyfraddau cyfranogiad merched a menywod mewn pynciau STEM, llofnodwch hyd at y rhestr cefnogwyr

  • Goodbye Instagram; hello Pixelfed

    I’ve been a big fan of the open source movement for many years. I can probably trace my interest back to at least 2003, which was the year I first installed the Thunderbird email software, followed a year later by experimenting with Ubuntu as the operating system for my laptop.

    I think I would describe the experience as ‘not for the faint-hearted’ back then, but over the last fifteen years, the open source movement has taken incredible steps. Open source software now runs most of the world’s IT infrastructure, most household hardware devices and is continuing to develop apace. Ubuntu is now the only operating system that I use on my laptop. Free, fast and fully functional. I love it.

    My awareness of open source issues has increased in line with my growing concern about the nature of ‘big data’ harvesting by corporations, with the expectation and intent of profit gained by using that data in amoral ways.

    The Cambridge Analytica scandal is one concrete example of how democracy itself is at risk from a cynical, cavalier use of personal data, which even now far outpaces the attempts of individual governments to regulate and control it.

    Like many people, I’ve had an Instagram account for years (a reminder – Instagram is owned by Facebook). Perhaps not a mega-keen user, but certainly uploaded plenty of photos, and presumably with a whole bunch of my personal data.

    Today that’s ended. I’ve been experimenting with a new, open source platform for photo sharing called ‘Pixelfed’. It’s similar in look and feel to Instagram, and in rapid development. Unlike Instagram, there’s no way that your personal data can be used to sell advertising or to shift election results. It’s as wholesome a product as you can find within the photo-sharing space.

    My experiment with the open source, distributed world isn’t restricted to photos. I’m also reasonably active on Mastadon, a federated version of Twitter which (like Pixelfed) does not collect data in order to derive financial gain. There’s even a Welsh version of Mastadon which connects to all the other users around the world, but is focused on the people and communities of Wales (my thanks to Jaz Michael-King for that!)

    I believe that the open source movement has a huge amount to offer the people of Wales (and of course everyone else). The open source movement is transparent, offers low-cost, customisable solutions, and exhibits a number of values which overlap with the Well-being of Future Generations.

    If Wales embraced the open source movement, I think we would save money, while simultaneously supporting our citizens to become more highly trained, more aware and more resilient. And by contributing code to the global commons, we would certainly be playing an even greater role in our quest to be a globally responsible country.

    I’m currently thinking about how best to promote this issue in Wales – potentially with something like a draft open source manifesto – and I welcome fellow collaborators who’d like to work with me. I think that together we could build a movement to celebrate and benefit from the open source community, and at the same time take back a little bit of the control that we have ceded to the data giants.

    Pan ddaw at y mudiad byd-eang eginol ar gyfer Dinasoedd y Parciau Cenedlaethol, mae Llundain wedi tanio llwybr, ar ôl sefydlu’r National Park City (NPC) cyntaf, a chreu Sefydliad Parc Cenedlaethol Dinesoedd i helpu i ysbrydoli eraill.

    Mae nodau Sefydliad Dinas y Parc Cenedlaethol yn niferus, ond maent yn cynnwys:

    • Cyfoethogi dinasoedd â natur
    • Grymuso pobl a chymunedau lleol i wneud gwahaniaeth cadarnhaol i’w hamgylchedd
    • Gwella llesiant, bioamrywiaeth, ansawdd aer ac ansawdd dŵr mewn dinasoedd

    Mae Afallen wedi bod yn dilyn datblygiad cysyniad NPC gyda diddordeb. Fe wnaethon ni ddewis diwrnod lansio NPC Llundain – 22 Gorffennaf – i greu gwefan NPC a chyfrif Twitter ar gyfer Cymru. Ein nod yw gweithio mewn partneriaeth â phobl a sefydliadau o bob sector, ac o bob math. Ein nod yw helpu i greu mudiad sy’n cael ei lywio gan arbenigedd a gwybodaeth leol, ac sy’n cael ei bywiogi gan yr awydd i wneud y byd yn lle gwell.

    Beth a ble?

    Mae’n ddyddiau cynnar eto yn natblygiad Dinas Parc Cenedlaethol yng Nghymru, felly nid ydym eto wedi gofyn barn am sut y dylai edrych, na ble y dylid ei leoli. Rydym yn fawr mewn cyd-ddylunio, cyd-gynhyrchu a chyd-gyflenwi, felly yn bendant nid ydym am fod yn berchen ar y cysyniad hwn. Credwn y bydd ar gyfer y bobl, gan y bobl.

    Mae Cymru yn wlad wledig yn bennaf, gyda dinasoedd llawer llai na llawer o’r gwledydd sy’n dilyn cysyniad y NPC ar hyn o bryd, felly mae’n dal i gael ei weld a fyddwn yn canolbwyntio ar un neu fwy o ddinasoedd – fel Abertawe neu Gaerdydd – neu a yw ardaloedd trefol mwy fel gan fod parthau Cymeriad Tirwedd Cenedlaethol, neu’r Cymoedd, yn fwy addas.

    Ar hyn o bryd rydym yn cael cefnogaeth anffurfiol gan sylfaenwyr Dinas Genedlaethol Parc Llundain, ac yn dechrau llunio rhestr o unigolion a sefydliadau cefnogol a allai fod â diddordeb mewn siapio sut y gallai Dinas neu ardal drefol Parc Cenedlaethol Cymru edrych.

    An urban National Park for Wales

    Building on the best

    Sometimes Wales is a pioneer. Sometimes we can learn from others who’ve gone first.

    When it comes to the nascent global movement for National Park Cities, London has blazed a trail, having founded the first National Park City (NPC), and created the National Park City Foundation to help inspire others.

    The aims of the National Park City Foundation are manifold, but include:

    • Enriching cities with nature
    • Empowering local people and communities to make a positive difference to their environment
    • Improving well-being, biodiversity, air quality and water quality in cities

    Afallen has been following the development of the NPC concept with interest. We chose the day of the launch of the London NPC – 22 July – to create a NPC website and Twitter account for Wales. We aim to work in partnership with people and organisations from all sectors, and of all types. We aim to help create a movement which is informed by expertise and local knowledge, and energised by the desire to make the world a better place.

    What and where?

    It’s early days yet in the development of a National Park City in Wales, so we haven’t yet solicited opinion about how it should look, nor where it should be located. We’re big into co-design, co-production and co-delivery, so we definitely don’t want to own this concept. We believe that it will be for the people, by the people.

    Wales is a predominantly rural country, with cities much smaller than many of the countries currently pursuing the NPC concept, so it remains to be seen whether we will focus on one or more cities – such as Swansea or Cardiff – or whether larger urbanised areas such as National Landscape Character zones, or the Valleys, are deemed to be more suitable.

    We’re currently getting informal support from the founders of the London National Park City, and starting to build up a list of supporter individuals and organisations who may be interested in shaping how a Wales National Park City or urban area might look.

    Rydym yn glir yn ein hymrwymiad i gyflawni prosiectau sy’n cefnogi ac yn gwella ein hamgylchedd naturiol, y system sy’n sail i’n holl seilwaith, gwasanaethau a chynhyrchion. Rydym nawr yn gallu dangos ein bod yn cadw ein tŷ ein hunain mewn trefn, gan ein bod wedi ennill gwobr Lefel 2 y Ddraig Werdd am reolaeth amgylcheddol.

    Mae System Rheoli Amgylcheddol y Ddraig Werdd (EMS) yn fersiwn ysgafn o 14001. Yn gyffredinol, mae cynllun y Ddraig Werdd yn fwy priodol i sefydliadau bach sydd ag effaith amgylcheddol gymharol fach. Mae’n ei gwneud yn ofynnol i’r sefydliad weithredu polisi amgylcheddol a’i fod yn cyflwyno ymrwymiad i gynnal archwiliad parhaus yn erbyn y polisi hwnnw.

    Mae ein Partneriaid yn sefydlu ‘yn y cartref’ (neu siopau coffi!), felly mae ein heffaith amgylcheddol yn bennaf yn y dulliau teithio a ddefnyddiwn ar gyfer busnes. Lle y bo’n bosibl, rydym yn defnyddio’r hierarchaeth drafnidiaeth, gan flaenoriaethu Teithio Llesol (cerdded a beicio), yna trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus, yna trafnidiaeth breifat. I gael rhagor o wybodaeth am yr hierarchaeth ac am gludiant carbon isel, rydym yn argymell edrych ar gyhoeddiad Sefydliad Materion Cymreig 2018 “Datgarboneiddio Trafnidiaeth yng Nghymru” (Saesneg yn unig).

    Pam mae hyn yn bwysig?

    Un o’r rhesymau a sefydlwyd gennym oedd darparu llwyfan lle gallai unigolion talentog o bob cwr o Gymru gyflawni gweithgarwch prosiect lefel uchel, heb orfod achredu eu hunain gyda’r gofynion niferus ar gyfer sicrhau tendr neu sicrwydd ansawdd prosiect sy’n aml yn ofynnol.

    Mae cyrhaeddiad Lefel 2 EMS y Ddraig Werdd bellach yn agor y posibilrwydd y gall Afallen a’n Associates wneud cais llwyddiannus am ystod ehangach o weithgaredd prosiect, ac o bosibl ar gyfer prosiectau llawer mwy.

    Byddwn hefyd yn chwilio am sefydliadau sydd wedi dangos ymrwymiad tebyg i’r amgylchedd – ac yn ddelfrydol i’r gwerthoedd eraill sydd gennym yn annwyl – a cheisio dod o hyd i ffyrdd y gallwn gaffael gwasanaethau neu nwyddau oddi wrthynt.

    Hoffem helpu i raeadru arfer da EMS mor eang â phosibl. Mae gweithgarwch busnes yn elfen hynod bwysig o gynaliadwyedd, a dim ond pan fydd y gymuned fusnes gyfan yn gwneud ei gorau glas y byddwn yn gallu cyflawni cynaliadwyedd gwirioneddol yng Nghymru.

    Os ydych chi’n hoffi ein gwerthoedd, a’ch bod yn hoffi gweithio gydag ymgynghorwyr gwych o bob cwr o Gymru ar brosiectau heriol a diddorol, cysylltwch â ni.   • Our environmental commitment

    Practising what we preach

    We are clear in our commitment to delivering projects which support and enhance our natural environment, the system that underpins all our infrastructure, services and products. We’re now able to demonstrate that we’re keeping our own house in order, as we’ve been awarded the Level 2 Green Dragon award for environmental management.

    The Green Dragon Environmental Management System (EMS) is a light-touch version of 14001. The Green Dragon scheme is generally more appropriate for small organisations with relatively modest environmental impact. It requires that the organisation implements an environmental policy and that it submits to an audit against that policy, with a commitment to undertaking continual improvement.

    Our Partners are home-based, so our environmental impact is predominantly in the modes of travel we use for business. Where possible we use the transport hierarchy, prioritising Active Travel (walking and cycling), then public transport, then private transport. For further information on the hierarchy and on low carbon transport, we recommend looking at the 2018 Institute of Welsh Affairs publication “Decarbonising Transport in Wales“.

    Why does this matter?

    One of the reasons we set up Afallen was to provide a platform within which talented individuals from across Wales could carry out high-level project activity, without having to accredit themselves with the many requirements for tender or project quality assurance that are often required.

    The attainment of Level 2 of the Green Dragon EMS now opens up the prospect of Afallen and our Associates being able to successfully bid for a wider range of project activity, and potentially for much larger projects.

    We’ll also seek out organisations which have demonstrated a similar commitment to the environment – and ideally to the other values which we hold dear – and try to find ways in which we can procure services or goods from them.

    We’d like to help cascade the good practice of EMS as widely as possible. Business activity is an incredibly important component of sustainability, and it’s only when the whole business community is doing its utmost that we will be able to attain genuine sustainability in Wales.

    Making a living

    It shouldn’t be strange, unusual or controversial to want to pay people a decent wage. And yet discussions about salary and the value that people bring to a company can sometimes seem taboo.

    Afallen is a values-based organisation. We value diversity. We value the ecosystem which supports the myriad of things that take place within it. And we value highly the people that we work with.

    That’s why we’ve decided to sign up to the Living Wage scheme. This signifies our intent to stand with the people that we contract to work with us; that we will remunerate them with at least the Living Wage; and that we stand for social responsibility. We’re in good company – there are 119 other Wales-based organisations which have signed up to the scheme.

    The research demonstrates that businesses signing up to the scheme reap the benefits. Part of this is undoubtedly through reputation – something that is very important to a fledgling business like our own. But some of the benefits accrue through stronger relationships with staff or the wider supply chain.

    In common with many other employers, our primary motivation for signing up is alignment with our values, our commitment to social responsibility and an enhanced reputation.

    Wales’ role in plastic pollution

    The Committee on Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs of the National Assembly has published a report on plastic pollution. It makes twelve recommendations to Welsh Government on ways to improve our environmental performance, including:

    • Legislating to restrict microplastics
    • Create a 10-year strategy aimed at reducing plastic pollution
    • Implement an extended producer responsibility scheme for plastic
    • Implement a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)
