Words are cheap. Actions have value.

I define myself as a feminist and anti-racist. But what do those words mean in the context of my everyday existence?

Feminist

I commit to:

  • Calling out sexist behaviour or comments
  • Spending time supporting projects aimed at improving the outcomes in society for girls and women
  • Following and promoting events, social media accounts, organisations and individuals who speak up for equality of outcome by gender

Things I have done to make a material difference:

  • I sit on the Welsh Government Equality in STEM Board
  • I started up a Twitter account promoting women & girls in STEM in Wales
  • I have incorporated the word ‘feminist’ in my social media profiles in order to give confidence to other men to do likewise, and to facilitate others holding me to account for my words

Anti-racist

I commit to:

  • Calling out racist behaviour or comments
  • Spending time supporting projects aimed at improving the outcomes in society for people from ethnic minority communities
  • Following and promoting events, social media accounts, organisations and individuals who speak up for equality of outcome for people from ethnic minority communities
  • Learning more about the history of Wales from the perspective of our contribution to colonial injustice
  • Learning more about the BAME history of Wales

Things I have done to make a material difference:

  • Lobbied for Welsh Government to take a specific interest in outcomes in STEM for people from ethnic minority communities
  • I have incorporated ‘anti-racist’ in my social media profiles to facilitate others holding me to account for my words
